About acrylic and graphite wash on paper

The graphite washes I use resemble watercolors that have been toned down a bit. Because of their base consisting of soluble graphite, the colors have a grayish tinge when applied to the paper. Once the water “activates” them, though, many of them become quite vibrant.

The small stormscape on the left is a good example of this process.

Acrylic paints dry quickly enough on canvas and almost too quickly on paper. Using acrylics on paper is a great way to try out new compositions and color combinations for that very reason.

A note on the pictures of matted works: many look like they have dark outlines, but that is not the case. Those are shadows caused by the mats. If you frame them or display them in the plastic sleeve I provide, the frame/sleeve presses the mat down, which greatly reduces the shadow effect.
